Farther than
the familiar.

Several journeys in one

Travelling through Indonesia is less like visiting many different places than making several different journeys. From the deranged city of Jakarta, with its brutal contrasts, to the great Buddhist and Hindu temple complexes; from diving with sharks in Komodo to spending three days travelling upriver in Borneo, in a kind of family Heart of Darkness, with only orangutans for company. From Bali’s terrifying figures to the markets of Semarang.

Indonesia does not feel like a single country crossed from end to end, but several journeys that, somehow, happened one after another.

Visited

A personal atlas, still being written.

I have visited 76 countries: every country in Europe, all 13 sovereign states of the Caribbean, Morocco and Egypt, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Chile, China, Japan, Southeast Asia and Australia. I like trips with several chapters, long walks and a camera. I also enjoy planning them to a level nobody asked for.

Each country is counted once. Europe includes its microstates, Kosovo and transcontinental countries; the Caribbean includes its 13 sovereign states. Small countries are shown with dots.

THREE FIXED POINTS

Places that arrived before the map.

Some destinations become important long before you reach them.

01 / FIRST OBSESSION

Loch Ness

The first place I ever remember wanting to travel to. The monster helped; Tintin and The Black Island probably helped more. Years later I ended up living in northern Britain, unexpectedly close to that childhood coordinate.

02 / RETURN

Patagonia

I have only been once. I would go back a hundred times. Some places remain destinations; Patagonia became a reference point.

03 / STILL TO COME

Himalaya

The one still missing. I have flown over it and watched it through aircraft windows several times, but I have never yet stood there.
